Meet Advising

Connie Montgomery, the director of advising and recruitment for the Evening Degree Program, has been with the program since its beginnings in 1990. She oversees the advising office and recruitment of students for the program. Connie said she never ceases to be amazed and inspired by accomplishments of Evening Degree students. A native of Lewiston, Idaho, she has a bachelor's degree in social science from Washington State University and two master's degrees in education from Oregon State University and Seattle University. She also officiates wedding and life partner ceremonies in her spare time.

Emily Batlan, Senior Counselor, has been with the Evening Degree Program since 2002. Emily brings her enthusiasm for student service, as well eight years of experience in recruitment and admissions with Cornish College of the Arts. Emily was a theater artist in Seattle for 15 years. Her work has been seen in a variety of venues such as Annex Theater, Alice B. Theater and Seattle Mime Theater. Her original solo performances have been seen in many small off-beat Seattle cabarets, as well as On The Boards (NW New Works, 12 Minutes Max) and Bumbershoot. She holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Willamette University and is currently earning a master’s degree in education with a focus in Adult Education at Antioch University in Seattle. In her free time, Emily enjoys the arts, yoga, biking, and friends (both human and animal).

Senior Counselor Maria Hopper moved to Seattle from Jacksonville, Florida, in 2005. With a total of 20 years experience at the University of Miami and Florida Community College, Maria brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to her position. Originally from Cuba, she grew up in Miami, and is fluent in both English and Spanish. She received her bachelor's degree in Communication and Sociology from the University of Miami, and her master's degree in Montessori Education from Barry University. Maria is married to a “major computer geek,” and is responsible for one dog and four cats. When she’s not busy chauffeuring her multi-talented teenage son around town, she enjoys gardening, reading and exploring the state of Washington.

Program Coordinator Michelle Rainey moved to Seattle from Iowa, where she grew up, and also where she earned her B.A. in Liberal Studies at Iowa State University. Before accepting her current position, she was an admissions representative at Ashmead College. She's grateful for her job with EDP advising and feels it's an excellent fit for her outgoing personality. Her hobbies include parallel parking, watching Ice Road Truckers on the History Channel, reading and hanging out in her new neighborhood.

Advising Assistant Camille Beck is a junior majoring in American Ethnic Studies at the University of Washington. Although she grew up in West Seattle, Camille enjoys traveling to Korea, where she was born and has visited six times. She has also traveled all over the States and Spain. Camille is unsure about what she plans to do once she graduates from the UW, and is considering a second major.
