Life After UW

Faculty Profiles: John Webster

For the past 30 years, John Webster has dedicated his life to building a culture of writing and an appreciation for English literature at the University of Washington (UW).

But Webster did not always posses a passion for English. It was during his time at the University of California at Los Angeles, while pursing his bachelor's degree, that Webster explored many subjects-everything from chemistry to economics and Germanics before finally choosing English. "I liked a lot about each topic, but in the end I wanted to read, write and talk about books." And he has ever since. This year Webster celebrates his 25th year of teaching English Literature in the UW's Evening Degree Program.

Webster enjoys being a part of the Evening Degree Program because it allows him to work with non-traditional students in a non-traditional setting. He believes that the program allows a mega-university like the UW to offer a small college experience to students. "I think the Evening Degree Program has been a godsend for many working people, offering high quality classes in a very special educational environment." He adds that "students in the Evening Degree Program do more than just take classes; they become part of a well-defined community."

Webster has spent the past three years as the Director of Writing for the College of Arts and Sciences working with the College Writing Council to promote a culture of writing throughout the College. He has received numerous grants and has won many awards including the University of Washington's Department of English Award for Distinguished Teaching and selection as a Carnegie Scholar by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
