Major Requirements

The major requires a minimum of 60 credits as specified below and a minimum GPA of 2.25:

  • Not more than 15 credits in 200-level courses
  • At least 45 credits in 300- and 400-level courses; and
  • A minimum of 15 credits of 400-level courses.

1. Primary track (25-35 credits selected from one track)

The primary track courses are a key element in the social sciences major. They not only involve more credits than any other single element, but also help students gain a sense of intellectual coherence in their educational endeavor.

2. Survey courses (15 credits maximum)

Since most students entering an Evening Degree Program will have completed two years of lower-division college work, many will have completed some survey courses in the social sciences (e.g., ANTH 202, SOC 271, POL S 202). Because such courses are required for the disciplinary major, and because they are relevant to the various tracks in the social sciences major, students who major in the social sciences emphasis may apply up to 15 credits of such coursework toward the major.

3. Track electives (10-20 credits)

This requirement may be met by selecting courses in the tracks other than the primary track.
