Certificate Programs Application Process

The deadline for receipt of applications is August 18, 2008. To apply for the individual certificate programs, visit the individual program pages:

Master of Medical Engineering Admission Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in an engineering or quantitative physical science discipline.
  • Three years professional engineering experience by the time of application to the degree (three to five years is suggested).

Applicants whose bachelor's degree is in a biological science or a field different from the normally required bachelor's in engineering or other quantitative discipline (see above) may apply for the Master of Medical Engineering degree program if they meet the prerequisite course requirements for day students in Bioengineering. Please contact Jennifer Gouine (jgouine@u.washington.edu) for further information.

Applicants will be evaluated on professional engineering experience, undergraduate GPA, Medical Engineering GPA (if applicable), letters of recommendation, and GRE test scores. Please note that admission to the degree is not guaranteed if you choose to take certificates prior to applying to the Master's program.

Applicants who do not qualify for admission to the MME degree program may be admitted to courses and/or to Medical Engineering Certificate programs.

English Proficiency: Students who are non-native English speakers are expected to have adequate English language proficiency. The Graduate School requires TOEFL scores from all non-citizens who don't meet the criteria in the next sentence. Applicants who are not citizens of the United States must provide an official TOEFL score of at least 580, unless they are citizens of Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom; or hold a bachelor's or advanced degree from an accredited institution in any of these countries. For information about the TOEFL, e-mail toefl@ets.org, call 1-609-771-7100, or contact Jennifer Gouine.

International Students: This program does not qualify as full-time study, and therefore does not meet requirements for an F-1 visa. However, if you are an F-1 student currently enrolled full-time in another program, OR you are in the U.S. on some other type of visa (not F-1), you may be eligible to take a certificate program or course. For complete details, or to contact an adviser, see Visa Information.

Master of Medical Engineering Application Process

When to Apply for Admission to the Master's Degree Program

Students have the option to apply to the Master's program right away or take one to two certificates prior to degree application. If students wish to take one or two certificates before applying to the degree program, they can complete the Basic Medical Sciences Certificate Program (18 credits), then apply for graduate nonmatriculated (GNM) status and earn a second certificate (12 credits) under the GNM status. Contact Jennifer Gouine (jgouine@u.washington.edu) for more information about GNM status or the degree application process.

Application deadline: The deadline for receipt of applications is August 18, 2008.

Questions about applying to the MME degree program, should be directed to Jennifer Gouine, graduate academic counselor, Bioengineering, at jgouine@u.washington.edu, 206-685-3494. Applicants may also wish to view the program Web site.

To Apply:

  1. Submit a completed UW Graduate School application form and application fee of $45:

  2. Direct your official GRE scores and, if appropriate, your official TOEFL score, using UW code #4854 and Department of Bioengineering code #1603.

  3. Submit a résumé and a personal statement (no more than two pages) detailing your reasons for applying to the program.

  4. Submit at least two letters of recommendation that address your engineering skills and ability to complete an advanced degree. Letters of recommendation from supervisors are preferred.

  5. Submit one set of official (unopened) transcripts from all non-UW institutions attended.

All materials should be sent to:

Jennifer Gouine
UW Bioengineering
1705 NE Pacific St., Room N107
Box 355061

In addition, there is a nonrefundable $35 registration fee and a $22 to $34 technology fee each quarter. The cost of textbooks is extra. Completing Certificate Programs and the Master of Medical Engineering

Because courses are arranged sequentially and are offered, at most, once each year, participants need to successfully complete the course in the previous term before they advance to the next term. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is required to earn a certificate or to receive the Master of Medical Engineering degree. In addition, a minimum grade of 2.7 is required for each course credited toward the Master of Medical Engineering degree.

Concurrent enrollment in more than one certificate program is allowed; however, students should carefully consider the time commitment required to take two graduate-level evening courses in the same quarter.

There are no elective courses in the Medical Engineering Degree Program. There is no provision for waiver of course requirements or substitution of other courses for the Master of Engineering curriculum.

The M.M.E. is a professional degree, and does not lead to the Ph.D. program in bioengineering at the University of Washington.

To maintain graduate status at the UW, degree students must be enrolled for a minimum of two credits each quarter, or obtain on-leave status. This requirement applies from the time of first enrollment in the Graduate School until completion of all requirements for the graduate degree. Summer Quarter on-leave enrollment is automatic for all graduate students who were either registered or on-leave the prior Spring Quarter. Failure to maintain continuous enrollment constitutes evidence that a student has resigned from the Graduate School.

Information About the GRE

GRE scores are a standard requirement for admission to the UW Graduate School, and are required for admission to the Master of Medical Engineering Program. The requirement for the GRE is waived for individuals who have earned doctorates (Ph.D., Ed.D., J.D.) from accredited U.S. institutions.

To schedule a GRE exam, call 1-800-GRE-CALL, or see the GRE Web site. To obtain copies of your GRE scores, call 1-888-GRE-SCORE.

The following codes should be used to direct your scores:
University of Washington, code #4854
Department of Bioengineering, code #1603

Applying for GNM Status

Individuals who want to apply for GNM status should contact Jennifer Gouine (jgouine@u.washington.edu) at 206-685-3494 for an application form and more information. Applications for GNM status must be submitted no later than one month prior to the first day of the quarter.

Single-Course Enrollment

Courses are available on an individual basis to professionals in biomedical and biotechnology fields who do not intend to pursue the certificate(s) or master's degree. See each individual certificate program for details and prerequisites.
